Tanya

Interests

Tanya is a clinical psychologist with more than 20 years of experience working in the field. Currently, she works full-time at Attune Psychology, a private practice. Her interest and speciality lie in providing therapy and counselling to people with a wide range of difficulties, including the symptoms of serious mental illness, the effects of trauma, anxiety and depression and other everyday problems with change, grief or relationship difficulties.

Speciality

Tanya has a passion for the role that relationships play in overall well-being and works with couples and parents and their children in their relationship difficulties. Her experience in perinatal mental health means that she is well-equipped to support young families as they adjust to having a baby. She also specialises in helping with parent-baby bonding and attachment difficulties. A substantial part of her practice is dedicated to providing supervision to psychologists and other professionals.

Qualifications

Tanya is registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board and holds a HPCA Act Clinical Psychologist scope of practice. She is also a member of the New Zealand Psychological Society. Tanya is an ACC provider and can provide services under the Pain, Sensitive claims and Psychological Services contracts.

Training and Experience

Tanya is trained in a range of therapeutic interventions, including CBT, mindfulness-based, systemic and attachment-based approaches. She will adjust her intervention to what is most suitable for the person she is working with. A standard part of her practice is regular outcomes measurement to ensure that her clients are benefitting from the intervention. She also relies strongly on feedback from her clients about what they are finding useful and how things can be adjusted to suit them better.

Tanya trained in South Africa at the University of Pretoria. Following this training, she worked in various settings, including universities, correctional services and mental health facilities. Since relocating to New Zealand in 2004, she has worked in mental health, specifically maternal mental health. She has also supervised intern psychologists in both countries and has been an external examiner for Masters-level exams.

Hobbies

Outside of work, Tanya enjoys spending time with her family. This includes George, her colleague and co-owner of Attune Psychology, their two busy teenage children and Max the spaniel. She loves painting, and when she isn’t in front of a canvas, you can find her on a mountain bike trying to keep up with the rest of the family.

Currently, he works full-time at his private practice, Attune Psychology, where he provides a range of services to young people, adults, couples and families. His work ranges from helping couples improve their relationships to helping individuals with recurring difficult mental health problems.

Speciality

George has a specific interest in working with couples and families and extensive experience of doing this work in various settings. A significant portion of his private practice time is dedicated to the provision of supervision to psychologists and a range of other health professionals.

Training and Experience

George is trained and experienced in a wide range of psychological interventions. In his current practice, he relies extensively on cognitive behavioural therapy and its adaptations. For instance, schema therapy would be used for the treatment of more complex and long-lasting problems. George also frequently utilises family or relational approaches to solving difficulties.

George worked in research consultation and community development before qualifying as a psychologist. He trained as a clinical psychologist in South Africa, where he gained his initial experience working in a psychiatric hospital setting for children and youth and working as a police psychologist. He was the professional leader and advisor for psychological services at Lakes District Health Board for 11 years. He has also been involved in a range of projects that aimed at improving health professionals’ skills in providing psychological intervention and assessing the effectiveness of such interventions. Additionally, George worked as a psychology advisor for ACC where he provided advice and guidance to ACC branch staff to assist them in effectively managing claims where psychological issues or factors impacted the rehabilitation of clients.

Qualifications

George is registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board and holds the HPCA Act Clinical Psychologist scope of practice. He is a member of the New Zealand Psychological Society and the Institute of Clinical Psychology.

Teletherapy Options Availible

What is Teletherapy?

Teletherapy, also known as online therapy, e-therapy or video therapy, is therapy delivered through a virtual platform via a computer. If you've ever used FaceTime or Skype then you know what we mean, it's essentially the same thing - except more secure.

How Do Online Therapy Sessions Work?

Teletherapy sessions work very much the same way as traditional therapy sessions with only one significant difference - the psychologist and the client are not in the same room. Sessions are scheduled as usual and then an invitation to the appointment is emailed to you with a link to a secured platform. When the time comes for the appointment you click on the link and the psychologist and client can see and hear each other in real-time during the session via the use of webcams and headsets. Most computers don't need headsets although using them can improve privacy and sound quality for the client.

Are Telehealth Sessions Private?

All Teletherapy sessions are private. Psychologists are ethically and legally bound by privacy laws to not share details about their telehealth sessions with third parties (except in the case of safety concerns when we may need to involve others to ensure safety), just as with face-to-face sessions. Psychologists must ensure they are in a private and secure room before engaging in any telehealth sessions. Sessions cannot be recorded or shared, unless you explicitly agree and sign a written consent.
In terms of the security of the software used, we use a specialised software typically used by health professionals such as Zoom, Doxy or Facetime that is fully encrypted and password protected, offering a high level of security and privacy.
